Rare birds in Sweden May 26 - June 1, 2003

Most of the rarities listed below are not official Swedish records until accepted by national or local rarities committees.

The two major rarities last week were both caught at Ottenby bird observatory on Öland. One bird was considered to be a Greenish Warbler, Phylloscopus trochiloides of the eastern race nitidus (formerly considered a separate species, Green Warbler).
If accepted it will be a new taxon for Sweden.
The other bird was caught and seen three days in a row; a Booted Warbler, Hippolais caligata (caligata), the third Hippolais caligata/rama on Öland within one year. Sofar there are 7 H. caligata and 2 H. (caligata) rama recorded in Sweden, all except one from 1990 and forward.
(Sykes's Warbler, Hippolais (caligata) rama is not accepted as a separate species by the Swedish taxonomic committee).

Lesser Scaup, Aythya affinis (mindre bergand)
1 ad m Lake Hornborgasjön (Västergötland) 30.5-1.6.

King Eider, Somateria spectabilis (praktejder)
1 Gotland and 1 Västerbotten.

Ruddy Duck, Oxyura jamaicensis (amerikansk kopparand)
1 Lake Hornborgasjön (Västergötland) 1.6, 1 Ålsäters viltvatten (Södermanland) 1.6.

Black Kite, Milvus migrans (brunglada) about 10.

Long-legged Buzzard, Buteo rufinus (örnvråk)

Little Crake, Porzana parva (mindre sumphöna)
